King’s College London Pre-University Summer School 29 July - 9 August 2013
The Programme
The King's College London Pre-University Summer School is a high quality and intensive academic programme open to high-school students (16-18 years) looking for a unique educational programme. It provides students with the opportunity to experience university life, with a combination of stimulating academic classes and a lively and varied social programme. A combination of on- and off- campus study, alongside an exciting social events and activities programme will help students prepare for university life as well as offering a chance to meet and study with students from all around the world. Excitingly students will experience two great global capitals because in addition to their London experience they will take part in a fully inclusive weekend trip to Paris.
The programme runs from Monday July 29 - Friday 9 August 2013. Students on the residential programme will be expected to arrive on Sunday 28 July and depart on Saturday 10 August.

Academic Overview
There will be three academic strands available which students can choose to study. All courses will provide a global insight into today’s world and will help students prepare for study at leading international universities. All courses are appropriate for students interested in studying at university level:

• Global Governance

This course will provide students the tools to determine and debate the most pressing issues facing international global governance today. This course is unique in its comparative study of the history, institutions, policies and theories of governance of the mayor international organisations today. It would be an ideal course for any student interested in studying International Relations or Policies at University level.

• Global Health

Global Health, focusing on health and the social, economic, political and cultural forces in the world that shape it, has never been so important. This course will help students gain a better understanding of the importance of healthcare in the wider world, and would benefit to any student interested in studying medicine or healthcare at university level.

• Global Leadership

Leaders aren't born, they are made, and this course offers an introduction to the central aspects of that leadership. Students will examine the key challenges global companies face and help develop an excellent understanding of the major approaches companies employ as they seek to dominate complex environments. This course would be ideal for students interested in studying business, politics or social sciences at university level.
Each course is limited to 20 places. This is to ensure a quality academic learning experience. Further information on each academic strand can be found on our website with further details and exact programme details confirmed in due course.
In addition to the academic study, students will benefit from the following sessions:

• Careers preparation and coaching; how to maximise potential in today’s world
• Personal development sessions; how to grow, develop and make the most of the university experience
• University preparation; how to stand out and shine

All courses are non-credit bearing but students will be expected to take part in all assessment which is expected will take the form of group exercises, presentations and learning journals. Certificates will be awarded to all students upon successful completion of the Pre-University programme. The final teaching programme will be confirmed in May.

The final deadline for applications is 15 May. However places are limited and subject to availability, so early application is strongly advised.
English Language requirement
If English is not the students first language then they will be required to provide evidence of English language ability which should be to high school standard and appropriate for study of an intensive Pre-University programme.

United Nations Experience

 

Experience the work of the United Nations at their European Headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland

We are now able to offer a truly unique opportunity for school / college students who have an interest in world affairs and an inquisitive mind to see the United Nations at work.

Students will learn through guided tours, presentations and observing working sessions in action. The range of subject areas that can be covered include – politics, ethics, human rights, languages, science, art, geography, citizenship.
They will have the opportunity to ask questions of diplomats, ambassadors, advisors, specialists etc. As well as factual knowledge, the students will acquire resources from the various agencies. They will be given special access passes, which will enable them to carry out research in the libraries and publications departments.
Students describe this experience as ‘life changing’. The combination of knowledge and personal development gained from this project helps to improve self-esteem and confidence and has proved useful in clarifying university choice and courses and is of course a most valuable entry on UCAS forms.

Case Study – Student helps to drive UN debate
On one trip Vicky Cooke of Archway School Stroud, was concerned that a country was not represented at a session while being accused of condoning honour killings. She interviewed the speaker and then prepared a newsletter on the subject as her project. The next day she distributed the newsletter amongst the delegates. To her amazement the Ambassador from the country turned up and tried to justify the government’s actions and dismiss the newsletter. The UN diplomat chairing the session held up the newsletter as an accurate account that needed to be answered and called on the particular government to acknowledge the problem of honour killing.

The itinerary for each visit is of necessity different depending on ‘who is in town’ but recent visits have included:

• Guided Tour of the United Nations Palais de Nations
• The activities of the International Labour Organisation
• The work of the United Nations World Food Programme
• The work of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees
• The activities of the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights
• The activities of UNICEF
• The United Nations Secretariat for the International Strategy for Disaster Reduction

Study Visits take place up to four times a year and are open to 6th form students. The cost of a 5 night study visit to Geneva is £340 per student, which includes bed and breakfast accommodation at the International Youth Hostel, all transport within Geneva, payment of UN fees, security clearance and the services of our expert facilitator.
In addition, students will have to pay flight costs, lunch and dinner. (The cost of meals is likely to be around £10-£15 per day, although by buying at local supermarkets, this can be reduced).
There are also opportunities for teachers / lecturers to take part in visits to further their own professional development.

18 sixth formers from three Doncaster schools flew from Manchester to Geneva to spend 5 days seeing the work of the United Nations. They stayed in a hostel, had a tour of the Palais des Nations, took part in a number of seminars and saw something of the beautiful city of Geneva.

Debate Chamber Summer Schools - Ages 15-18

 

 

Summer Schools 2013

The Debate Chamber Summer Schools offer students 15-18 the opportunity to find out more about their favourite subjects, prepare for university applications, and enjoy a completely new approach to learning.
Working in small groups over several days means a real chance to get to know your tutors and fellow students. The material will be challenging (about the level of difficulty you might expect in your first year at university), but a relaxed atmosphere, with plenty of discussion, debate, and opportunity for students to shape the direction of classes creates the perfect environment for getting to grips with new ideas.
Our Summer Schools are about much more than just lectures and seminars. For example, the English Summer School includes poetry composition workshops, play readings and tickets to a performance at Shakespeare’s Globe. The Summer Law School includes a visit to the Inns of Court and Royal Courts of Justice as well as a full Mock Trial in which students take on the role of Crown Court barristers.
