Advance warning - Medical Work Experience - Date for your diary

Work Experience

Princess Alexandra Hospital has always had a reputation for being at the forefront when it comes to giving young people a helping hand on the road to a career in the NHS. The Trust is committed to offering work experience placements to young people and has seen the 14 – 19 project grow in reputation and popularity to the point where this academic year there have been more than 200 placements in wards and departments throughout the hospital. None of this would be possible of course without the dedication and commitment of staff working in these areas, who are willing to welcome the students into their department and take the time to demonstrate their skills and share their experiences. A very big thank you goes out to all departments and staff who have helped in this way and continue to contribute to the success of the programme.
The Trust offers two main types of work experience. The first being a 1 week block placement in one of the following areas:
  • Ward Assistant (1 week only placement)
  • Eye Unit (1 week only placement)
  • Administration (1 week only placement)
  • Radiology (over 18 only and 1 day only placement)
  • Theatres (over 18 only and 1 day only placement)
  • Mortuary (over 18 only and 1 day only placement)

The second is a week long programme aimed at 17-18 year olds who are applying to medical school. The programme will include shadowing Doctors and Consultants in the following areas:
  • Theatres
  • Pathology
  • Outpatients
  • Wards
  • Mortuary
