This residential course will introduce you to the world of fashion via sessions based on the short courses offered at LCF. Tutors are drawn from both academia and industry to offer the best experience, and the two-week course will typically be taught by between two and five teaching staff to further enhance your time with us.

Course overview:

If you are considering entering into the world of fashion and textiles then this exciting workshop will offer insight into how designers research, record and communicate their ideas. You will develop your own design identity through a series of research and practical design exercises, concluding with 3D design work on the dress stand, hand-printed t-shirts and a completed embellished garment.

Topics include:

  • Fashion drawing: learning to capture movement and gestures
  • Drawing clothes from a stand onto templates: understanding drape and volume
  • Mood boards: colour, theme and style
  • Fashion illustration: developing your own drawing style
  • T-shirt printing: stenciling , screen printing and heat transfer
  • Understanding a shop bought pattern: marking, laying and taking measurements
  • Introduction to using a domestic sewing machine: what stitches to use with what fabric
  • Investigating various embellishment techniques: ribbon work, beading and hand stitching
  • Customising your own garment
  • Garment assembly: sewing, pressing and finishing techniques
You will develop research and creative thinking skills in this series of workshops and be introduced to the practical areas of fashion design and construction which will form the foundation for any future design based work.

On completion of this programme you can expect to come away with:

  • Sketchbook full of ideas and inspiration
  • Final mood board including figure templates
  • A selection of embellishment samples
  • Two hand printed t-shirts of your own design
  • Completed hand embellished garment
