We will be running unique subject-based masterclasses for Year 12 students in July 2013.
Masterclasses are open to state school Year 12 students. The masterclasses are developed by leading UCL academics and are designed to give you a greater insight into an academic subject area and university teaching and learning techniques.
Information about the 2013 masterclasses will be available on this website later in the academic year. The masterclasses listed below took place in July 2012.
Careers in Pharmacy
Nadia Bukhari
UCL School of Pharmacy
Monday, 9th July 2012, 5.00- 7.00pm
Is Chemistry your forte at school? If so, Pharmacy may be the career for you.
Join the masterclass at UCL to find out the different career pathways you can take as a pharmacist. Dispensing medicines on the local high street is not the only role we fulfil. With the aid of an interactive workshop using prescriptions, this masterclass promises to give you an overview of how pharmacy fits in the healthcare profession.
This masterclass is open to all students who are interested, although it is particularly suitable for students studying Chemistry, Biology, Physics or Mathematics.
Flowing Fluids: From Rivers to Stars and Planets
Dr Chris Arridge
UCL Department of Space and Climate Physics
Monday, 9th July 2012, 5:00- 7:00pm
Fluids are found to flow everywhere, from pipes and toilets in the home, to rivers and oceans, to supersonic gas flowing out from the Sun past the planets, to winds from newly born stars. Although these are all very different situations the physical laws which govern flowing fluids are the same in each case.
In this lecture we will look at the properties of fluids found in different places in the Universe, from the home to the most distant stars. We will look at the forces driving flowing fluids and look at several examples: winds on Earth, water draining from a sink, flows of gas around giant planets, and winds and jets from stars. We will look at shock waves and turbulence produced when two fluids collide and when a fluid is made to go around an obstacle like a car or planet. Finally we’ll look to see if our understanding can be applied to something very different: flows of traffic and pedestrians!
This masterclass is open to all students who are interested, although it is particularly suitable for students studying Physics, Chemistry, Geography or Mathematics.
Sport, Politics and Propaganda in the Ancient World
Professor Christopher Carey
UCL Department of Greek & Latin
Monday, 9th July 2012, 5:00-7:00pm
In Ancient Greece the international games both united and divided the Greek world. They served as a marker of Greekness, since only Greeks could participate. Yet, at the same time the festivals provided an arena for fierce interstate competition. Winning mattered, especially in an athletic environment which had only winners and losers, no second or third places. Sport then as now was much more than fun. It's been claimed that sport is war by other means. The session will explore the way athletic victory in the international games was exploited by cities and powerful individuals to compete for and maintain political power and prestige.
This masterclass is open to all students who are interested, although it is particularly suitable for students studying Ancient History, History, Greek, Latin or Classical Civilisation.
Criminal Law
Ms. Olga Thomas
UCL Faculty of Laws
Tuesday, 10th July 2012, 5:00-7:00pm
Have you ever wondered whether there was a way to get away with murder? If so, this is the masterclass for you! This interesting, fun and interactive session will familiarise participants with one of the criminal law defences. It will consist of a short lecture followed by case studies and the opportunity to offer legal advice to fictitious clients.
This masterclass is open to all students who are interested, although it is particularly suitable for students who are considering studying Law at university.
Medical Physics: Bringing Science to Life
Professor Clare Elwell
UCL Department of Medical Physics & Bioengineering
Tuesday, 10th July 2012, 5:00-7:00pm
Ultrasound scans of foetuses growing in the womb, images that allow us to watch the brain think and electrical nerve stimulation to help paraplegics walk are all examples of Medical Physics at work in the 21st century. Medical physicists work at the interface between technical development and clinical application, using their physics skills to solve healthcare problems. With the aid of a number of demonstrations of modern hospital and medical research equipment, this Masterclass will illustrate the crucial role that Medical Physics plays in medicine. Find out how physicists really can bring science to life.
This masterclass is particularly suitable for students who are studying Physics, Maths, Biology, Chemistry, or Further Maths. It is also suitable for any student considering a university degree in Medicine, Physics or Engineering.
Finnish
Dr Riitta-Liisa Valijärvi
The UCL School of Slavonic and East European Studies
Wednesday, 11th July 2012, 5.00- 7.00pm
Finland is the land of Nokia and the Moomins. In this masterclass you will find out about Finnish culture and history and hear about the general features of the Finnish language. You will learn how to read and pronounce Finnish, and how to talk about yourself and answer some basic questions in Finnish. The class gives you an idea of what it is like to learn a new foreign language at university.
This masterclass is open to all students who are interested, although it is particularly suitable for students studying French, Spanish, German, or any other languages.
Climate Change and your Local Council: Determining Future Policy
Tom Cohen
UCL Department of Civil, Environmental and Geomatic Engineering
Monday, 16th July 2012, 5:00-7:00pm
Climate change has been described as the largest challenge to face humankind and it is argued that all parties need to be involved in addressing it. This masterclass is about the roles of local councils and citizens and will provide experience of university style discussion and thinking.
In the masterclass, participants will be making decisions about the projects which a local council will implement.
After an introductory presentation about climate change, you will split into groups to make choices amongst a set of policy options, taking into account their financial costs and climate change impacts. There will be discussion, negotiation and voting.
This masterclass would particularly suit anyone studying environmental subjects, Politics or Maths but is open to everyone.
The Past Simple, the Imperfect and the Brave Matchmaker
Mazal Oaknin
UCL Department of Spanish & Latin American Studies
Tuesday, 17th July 2012, 5:00 7:00pm
The past simple and the imperfect are widely used when referring to past events. Both tenses describe past actions that have no connection with the present moment; however, each of them is used in different situations. Our class will practice and contrast the past simple and the imperfect in the authentic context of a novel, thanks to which the cultural topic of the matchmaker will be introduced.
This masterclass is open to all students who are interested, although it is particularly suitable for students studying Spanish, Latin, French, German, or any other languages.
