A
BRIGHT FUTURE:
Around 6 new nuclear power stations are needed by
2025 (in reality we need them much sooner) in order to meet our electricity
needs. We currently have 16 reactors but they are all due to be retired before
2023. The new build will create a demand for a huge number of apprentices and
STEM graduates (mainly engineers and physicists). In order to give people a
taster of the industry Cogent has launched ‘Nuclear Island’ which is a weeklong
work experience on various aspects of the industry for engineering undergraduates,
see www.nuclearisland.co.uk. For details of degree courses that contain elements particularly
relevant to the sector see; http://nuclearliaison.com/ni-courses. Other useful websites are: www.cogent-careers.com; www.nuclearsectorjobs.co.uk; www.cogent-ssc.com and http://raeng.org.uk
